6 years ago our Managing Director, John Heward took the leap from full time employment where he had worked since the age 16, bought a van and set up his own business, and hasn’t looked back since!
Over the years we have acquired a hard-working team of experienced mechanical and electrical engineers, all with specialist skills.
We are currently home to 30 members of staff and have plans to keep building our workforce as we secure more contracts and continue to grow.
John says: “What a journey it has been! As with any young business there have been challenges along the way and lessons learnt, but with a great team around us we have managed to seize opportunities to grow and we are in a great position.”
Heather Heward, Director, supported John for the first 5 years before formally coming into the business 1 year ago to assist with the continued growth; helping with a 100% increase in turnover during this year.
Heather has used her previous experience to help to the business grow and prosper and help secure key contracts.
Heather says: “I am delighted to be a part of such a hard-working team, and I am excited to see what the future holds for us!”
Both Heather and John are passionate about promoting and raising awareness of career opportunities in the engineering sector and in supporting young people to gain vital experience in the world of work.
Just recently we have welcomed two apprentices from Middlesbrough College who will learn directly from our team the skills needed complete Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Apprenticeships.
John is also an Enterprise Advisor for Outwood Academy in Acklam and is also running a special interest group for skills development on behalf of the Federation for Small Businesses.
Indeed, our company is passionate about developing strong industry links with the education sector to ensure there are robust pathways to employment for all young people and to help develop a pipeline of talent for the engineering sector across the Tees Valley; this is an area we will continue to get involved and engage with in the future.
John says: “I am looking forward to watching our apprenticeship programme develop and our newest recruits gain the knowledge and expertise from our experienced workforce.
They are the engineers of the future and no doubt in years to come will be involved in helping to train up future generations of engineers; it is all about developing and maintaining the workforce pipeline so that our sector continues to grow and prosper in the Tees Valley and beyond!”
We also welcomed Liam McDermott, Senior Mechanical Contracts Manager, who himself started as an apprentice 30 years ago and has gained an array of knowledge and experience in the mechanical building services industry.
Liam said: “Following a chance meeting with John, I was extremely impressed with his passion for the industry, commitment to the quality of work for his clients and his vision for the future of JH Mechanical Services.
I was convinced this was a venture I wanted to be involved in and I am delighted to have joined the team and look forward to the future with excitement.”
The future is looking bright for us here at JH Mechanical Services as we continue to grow and develop as a company, we can’t wait to share our story along the way.
John adds: “I started as a man with a van and I couldn’t be prouder of what has been achieved to date.
My goal is to be the best company to work for and the best company to work with.”
